The Cardiopulmonary Team at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial can test a patient’s heart functions through a variety of methods. Our team consists of experienced healthcare professionals in the specialties of cardiopulmonary testing.

The Cardiopulmonary Department offers the latest in technology and expertise in cardiac and pulmonary related testing procedures, such as:

• Holter Monitoring – The holter and even test involved a portable cardiac monitor that records the heart’s electrocardiogram for a prescribed period of time. The monitories applied with electrodes on the chest, connected to a small,lightweight recorder that captures heart beat continuously. As the patient follows their normal daily routine, the heart’s activity is recorded so you, the physician, can monitor how your patient’s heart responds to normal activities.

• EKG (electrocardiograms) – EKG’s chart the heart’s electrical activity. Electrodes are placed on the patient’s chest, and extremities are connected to a monitor that reads the heart’s electrical impulses. These impulses are translated into a visual graph and the patterns can tell you, the doctor, whether or not the electrical activity in your patient’s heart is normal and if disease or damage is present.

• Echocardiogram (Echo) – An echocardiogram creates a visual image of the heart by using sound waves (sonar), which are bounced off the heart by means of a small transducer (looks like a microphone) placed on the chest. As the sound bounces or echoes off the heart structures, they are translated into visual images on a screen monitor. The images can reflect structural problems with the heart and its valves. An echoca diagram is a painless and safe diagnostic procedure as there are no known side effects from the ultrasound waves. From the echo images, it is possible to:
• Measure the size of the four chambers of the heart.
• Study the appearance and motion of the heart valves.
• Conclude how forcefully the heart muscles contracts to move the blood into each chamber of the heart and out to the lungs and the rest of the body.
• Determine how well the heart is functioning and detectany abnormalities that may be present.
