Health Issues as Part of Hurricane Preparation
Florida Hospital Association has partnered with the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) and other public and private organizations across the state to remind Floridians to think about their health needs while they restock their supplies for the ongoing 2009 hurricane season.
Recommended preparations include the creation of a personal health record, including a current list of prescriptions, immunizations, and other important health information. The Florida Personal Health Record Tool Kit is available to assist Floridians in their preparations.
Because there is a chance paper records may be damaged or destroyed during hurricanes or similar events, Floridians should explore the option of creating electronic personal health records. These electronic records provide health care professionals with instant access to critical health information, including medical histories, diagnoses, and treatments regardless of where paper medical records are stored.
FloridaHealthFinder.gov contains easy to understand information and instructions about paper and electronic personal health records including:
- Specific items your personal health record should contain
- Choosing paper or electronic records, and which one is best for you and your family
- Privacy and security information
In the event of a disaster, residents may need to evacuate their homes, and access to medical care could be limited. Gathering health information and necessary supplies such as all current prescription and over-the-counter medications now will ensure that Floridians are prepared in case of emergency.
