Exceptional Volunteers sought for Florida Hospital Fish Memorial Foundation Award

2/4/2010
ORANGE CITY, FL—February 3, 2010 — For the second year in a row, Florida Hospital Fish Memorial is looking for exceptional volunteers who demonstrate the spirit of the area’s best known volunteer.

Johana Knox,  who has lived in Orange City for 31 years, is known not only for her love of butterflies, but for her tireless devotion to children and those in need. She gets around with the help of a walker, but don’t let that fool you – Johana, 78, doesn’t let anything get in the way of her passion for helping others.

Johana is probably best known for overseeing the Blue Spring Manatee Festival, an annual community fundraiser. For the past two decades, 100 percent of the proceeds – nearly $20,000 each year – have gone toward scholarships for students and small grants to local non-profit organizations.

The list of other not-for-profit organizations in which Johana has been involved is too lengthy for this announcement. Even so, she claims there are “many more people who do more than I do—I’m just a peon.”

To honor the spirit of Johana’s volunteerism, the Florida Hospital Fish Memorial Foundation has announced “The Johana Knox Award (JKA) for Community Service Excellence.” This award will recognize, celebrate and encourage outstanding volunteers in Southwest Volusia. Recipients will be identified through a nomination process and will receive the award at an event which benefits cancer patients of  Florida Hospital Cancer Institute – Fish Memorial. The event will take place Thursday, April 22 at DeBary Golf and Country Club.

“Johana Knox is a legend in this community,” said Kimberly Cline, chair of the JKA planning committee. “We are honored to have her lend her name to this award and we look forward to recognizing outstanding community volunteerism.”

Applications for nominees are available online at www.fhfishmemorial.org, via email at Camille.murawski@fhfm.org, or by calling the Foundation at 386-917-7197.
