For a young hospital built in 1994, FLORIDA HOSPITAL Fish Memorial has a long history dating back to 1952 and a legendary Philanthropist Judge Bert Fish, whose name continues to be preserved and revered. In more recent years, Orange City Health Affiliates, Inc., a not-for-profit healthcare company created by FLORIDA HOSPITAL, purchased the West Volusia Hospital Authority’s interest in Volusia Medical Center for $4.5 million in June, 1996. The Southwest Volusia Healthcare Corporation continued to operate Volusia Medical Center with FLORIDA HOSPITAL as the managing entity.Volusia Medical Center and the Bert Fish Foundation agreed to rename the hospital to reap the benefits of the strong FLORIDA HOSPITAL name, while also paying tribute to the hospital’s legacy Judge Bert Fish.
Volusia Medical Center was renamed FLORIDA HOSPITAL Fish Memorial in April 1998.
FLORIDA HOSPITAL Fish Memorial has a history and heritage that traces back to Judge Bert Fish. Judge Bert Fish spent his life in service of the United States from his appointment as Reading Secretary to the Florida State Senate at the turn of the century, to the Ambassador role he played with Egypt and Portugal. Though his travels were vast, his heart was never far from Volusia County, Florida. He left behind his wealth to establish the Bert Fish Foundation. The foundation funds healthcare clinics and facilities in Volusia County to assist in caring for the indigent. In addition, it supports healthcare educational efforts to ensure latest advances are available to the people of Volusia County.
1952
The contributions made by the Bert Fish Foundation have been an integral part of the success of healthcare facilities and education in Volusia County. In 1952, Fish Memorial Hospital opened in DeLand as a 50-bed facility located on a site donated by the Fish family. It expanded over the years to 97 beds.
1987
The West Volusia Hospital Authority (WVHA) purchased Fish Memorial Hospital. When the time came to refurbish the facility, the WVHA had the foresight to relocate the hospital to a venue that would provide
easy access for Orange City, DeBary and Deltona residents. Subsequently, the outpatient clinic called Volusia Medical Center and the inpatient facility called Fish Memorial Hospital were built on the same campus in Orange City and opened in September 1994. Before becoming known as FLORIDA HOSPITAL Fish Memorial, the new facility endured a period of transition as it struggled as one facility operating under dual names: Volusia Medical Center and Fish Memorial Hospital.
1996
FLORIDA HOSPITAL, a partner in establishing the new facility, purchased the remaining interest for $4.5 million from the WVHA and acquired the hospital.
